Cytoscape is an open source software platform for visualizing molecular interaction networks and biological pathways. It integrates these networks with annotations, gene expression profiles and other state data. Visualizing a complex network requires a great deal of calculations, thus takes a long time to render large networks with original software-based engine. This project aims to replace the original Cytoscape-2D engine with one taking advantage of high speed GPU calculation and delivering much better efficiency. The proposed project’s goal is to build an optimized renderer that works faster with rendering a large network, has the ability to draw more nodes and can be displayed better on high-resolution screens based on previous work. Additionally, as the low level of Cytoscape System, the new renderer should be compatible with the system while easy to maintain and test.
